Thomas the train is one of the first toy model trains to capture the fantasy of young boys everywhere. Trains have long been awe-inspiring and even addicting to millions of people around the world. As small children, they watch the cartoon talking trains on Saturday morning, not fully grasping what makes them so awesome. As they grow up into adults however they learn that the captivation they felt as children has less to do with the imagery and more with the raw power of the machine and that the average person can control them.

What is it that drives men to play with toys? It might be that they are enthralled by the thought of controlling something so powerful even though it is 1/87 of its size. Maybe it is the puzzle of how trains work; the electricity running through the lines to make it run. Perhaps it is because trains are so organized; only able to run on its track. Or maybe it is the memories of seeing the train whistling around the Christmas tree every year that makes us want to relive it through our toy trains. But the word toy is not accurate any longer when talking about model trains. These toys have grown up into machines and are ready to play with the big boys.

Most toy trains that you find on sale during the holiday season are of the plastic variety. Generally, they are low priced and low quality though they are a great way to introduce children to the hobby. As young boys grow up they become known as men, likewise when toy train models grow up they are known as locomotives. Locomotives are built for the long haul. Sets of this caliber are made of better materials and unlike cheaper train models; you will not have to push it, a little to get the train started. The wheels are designed to stick to the track better, which in turn means better connectivity to the electric that powers the train. Railroaders everywhere will smile at these improvements! In addition, the locomotive models have much stronger engines, which of course means these babies will pull like a horse. If you are unsure, whether you are looking at a true locomotive or a cheap toy model trains remember that locomotives are made of metal and not plastic. Metal trains are much heavier than plastic, which creates better contact with the tracks and overall a better running model.

And if electricity wasn’t good enough, the wonderful makers of the model train industry offer steam engines for the little boys inside grown men. Of course there are a lot of different quality trains on the market that offer steam but, there is nothing better then enjoying these trains with lifelike steam filling their scenery.

Although many people would love to grow up and drive trains, not everyone can or will. Some who do may not see their job as a lifelong dream but rather a simple job they must do. However if you are a person who has loved trains for as long as you can remember there is another way to enjoy the scenery. A toy model train is a hobby that can fulfill some of the longing in your heart.

Trains have always fascinated children, boys in particular. And a favorite of the young is Thomas the Train. They watch everyday, mesmerized, fascinated. It’s an addiction the young are unaware of, and wouldn’t understand, if they were. Why do they find them so wonderful? Then the young grow into adults, and the fascination remains, but now they understand their fascination. Now they realize what had captured them; control over a powerful machine.

It’s a known fact; men like to play with “toys”. What is it that drives them to do so? What makes them want to control a powerful machine? Even if it’s only 1/87 of the size. Maybe it’s how a train functions. The inner workings, like the electricity, the source of its power. Or maybe it’s that the trains is limited to running on tracks. Could it possibly be the memory of a train setup, around a Xmas tree, going around and around and around it each Xmas morning every year. But in reference to model trains, the word toy is no longer appropriate. Toy model trains have grown into machines, along with the little boys, who have grown into men.

The toy trains that you normally see around Xmas time are those that are made from plastic. They are priced low and are not high quality, but low quality. They are, however, a great way to introduce children to a potential hobby. Boys grow into men and toy trains become locomotives, and made to last. They do not have the “push it lightly to move it” feature as in the plastic lower quality trains. Wheels are made to provide better contact with tracks, better contact with tracks supplying electricity helps the trains run better . These trains also have heavier locomotives, and this helps with the contact on tracks. They are made of metal, not plastic, are stronger and have more pulling power. All of which make model toy trains enthusiast happy. How much the train weights has a lot to do with how it works. The heavier, the better, and the more contact it will have with the current running through the tracks; this means better running power.
The locomotive made out of metal also means a better quality machine.

We’re not going to stop there, with electricity. As if wasn’t enough, we can also get steam run engines for the adult boy. These steam engines are now being offered by the manufactures of these wonderful adult model trains. Many different qualities and models are being offered, but nothing is better than watching a running steam engine with the engines smoke streaming in the air.

Not many boys grow up to be engineers of a real locomotive, but I’m sure many would have loved to be living that dream. It’s not necessary to drive a real engine when you can bring your dream to life with your love of model trains. Become a hobbyist and live the dream of your younger years, as a boy, and build your own railway setup today.

With your first introduction to the world of model trains, you hear words like gauges and scales being bantered about between model train enthusiasts. Conversation that is an everyday occurrence, in the world of model trains, and confusing for a beginner. You may begin to feel inadequate. However, you love model trains and soon you begin to understand the meaning of gauges and scales. The excitement builds and now you can’t wait to get started.

When hobbyist begin to envision their perfect landscape and how the trains will run through it, it starts to become a realty in their minds. Now they need to think about many things to bring their dream to fruition. Size is one of them. Model trains and the tracks that are used are made by different companies and their uses also differ. Fortunately, the choices available are many, and each enthusiast will find exactly what they are looking for. Because trains and tracks are made according to gauge (size), there is no problem with fitting trains to tracks. Scales meaning is simple, the model train has been made smaller than, but identical to a real life train. Different scales mean different sizes. Some model trains are small and others are large and some in between.

Smaller in size, compared to other model trains, is the N scale model train. Of the four smaller and most popular train sizes the N train is the smallest. The scale of the N model trains is 1:160, scaled down to one sixtieth the size of a real train, and is just a bit larger than half the size of an HO model train. The HO scale is 1/87. The N scale is desired by those with limited space or who want a more expansive and detailed setup for their model trains. Although the N scale model trains are great for a limited setup space, their detail is better than some other small size trains. These model trains also lend to a larger setup and one that is easily maintained, or added onto at a later date. Another benefit of using N scale model trains is that their smaller size makes the scenery look larger, and larger scenery will look more beautiful.

The N scale model trains became popular during the 1960s, while the HO and O scales model trains, most of which, have been around for a century. N scale describes its size, nine millimeters, a gauge of 9mm between rails, and gauge refers to the size of track used by the model trains that run on them. It measures the distance that is between rails of train tracks. However, the height of the rail is determined by code. The N scale model trains are just one of the parts that are needed to building a model train setup, including scenery. It is the hobbyist, or enthusiast who determines the size of the train which is best suited to the kind of setup they want to build. Whatever the decision, the thrill is always there.

The desires of each model train enthusiast will be different from each other. One may want to set his setup in a outside garden or lawn, another will want a much larger model train setup, and still another will have a small intimate space he would want to use for his train setup. To accommodate all these different taste and desires in train models, manufacturers have developed a number of different sizes of model trains. The most popular of all the sizes available in model trains is the O scale, and the scale of the O is 1/48, which translates into a train that is only 48th the size of a real life train. The O gage is 1 ¼ inches. Because these are the larger model trains, they are often used outside or in gardens. There are different train sizes for different enthusiasts, (hobbyist.)

Half the size of the O scale is the HO gauge. HO is "Half of O" and that scale is 1/87. The gauge, of the track, that is used by the HO model trains is the standard 16.5mm. The HO model trains are the most popular train size to use in layouts. They are small enough to setup in small areas, and also work well in larger areas. Small enough to use your scenery design for a perfect and attractive landscaping display. But they are also large enough to handle lots of detail in the landscaping of your display. And, with HO scale, little hands can handle these trains, and you needn’t worry about tiny parts getting damaged. The HO scale is much sought after, being the most balanced of details between larger models and the smaller scaled model trains. This size is most desirable to many model train enthusiasts.

During the nineteen thirties in the United Kingdom, the HO scale model trains first made the debut, as an option to the OO scale model trains. The HO model trains struggled a long time before they made any headway, due to the OO scale trains establishment in the market. Fortunately, in the United States there was a huge demand for realistic toys during the late 1950s and it was here that he HO scale model trains soured in popularity into the 1960s, even up to today. HO model trains are popular with more than two thirds of train lovers.

A huge selection of locomotives, accessories, sets and more are manufactured by different business, and this is the result of the popularity of the HO scale model trains. The ho scale trains come with modular tracks in ready-to-run trains. The hobbyist can find different kits to build models and high detailed locomotives. They go to local hobby stores, over the internet to find suppliers and manufactures around the world to find the exact piece they need to complete their display.

Are you considering becoming a hobbyist of HO model trains? You can, you know. Just think of the
satisfaction of building a detailed landscape for your new set of HO model trains. Mountains, pastures, forests, waterfalls. You can create towns or villages, farms and more and more. Then when you’re finished, you can impress your friends with your creative abilities.

When a hobbyists, of model trains, make a reference to large-scale model trains they are talking about the G scale series. Compared to other scales of model trains, it is larger. Actually it is the largest scale of the popular sizes of model trains. Compared to the size of a real train the G scale model trains are 1:22 of their size, or scaled down to one twenty-second of the size of a real train. The other model train scales are relatively lower in scale ratio. For example, the scale of the O model trains is 1:48 and only half the scale of the G scale model trains. Another example of size difference is the length and height of these model trains. G scale, for example, is 26.7 inches long and 6. Inches high. While the O scale model trains length is 16.1 with a height of 3.6 inches. A company called Lehmann Patenwerk, a German company. Founded in the year of eighteen eighty-one, and also known as Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB.) In English it is known as “Lehmann Big Train.” It has an office in the USA called LGB of America.

“Garden Railroading” is the commonly used phase in reference to the G scale model trains and was the reason for the term “G Scale”. G is the short term for the German word groB (big) and the
reason the letter G is used to name this scale of model trains. This does, however, coincide with Germany history. The G scale model trains, as with any other large scale trains, uses a No. 1 gauge track and has is 45 mm distance between the rails.

They are the perfect choice for outdoor use or in the garden, because they are durable, tough and usually made of brass, and require very little if any maintenance by their owners. They are very easy to clean and only require a good wipe of a dry clean cloth and it’s done. And they’re ready to go, as simple as that. The G scale model trains can and have been used outdoors, and does depend on the model of the trains to be used for an outdoor display.

In the United States, you will find Aristocraft and Bachmann to be the best G scale manufacturers. The G scale model trains are very popular with owners, because of its durability. The benefit of this is the length of time these model trains last; for years and can be enjoyed and passed down to future generations. The G scale model trains make a great hobby for the whole family. One they can enjoy for many years together. Parents can feel comfortable while their children play, and feel sure the children can handle these trains. A very young child may benefit from a smaller scale of model train. One about 4.8 inches long and 1.1 inches high.

Model trains have been around for generations, and since then, every conceivable size, to fit everyone’s needs and purpose has been made. Among these, of course is the G scale model train.

We all love model railway trains and building them with lots of scenery to surround them. But that’s only part of the fun. There’s more ways to enjoy your model trains, than just around the Xmas tree, once a year. You might want to have them available all year long.

The foundation of your model trains railway system would be the bench work. As a hobbyist you have a couple of options. You could build one yourself or buy one already made. There are advantages to buying a benchwork kit, everything is predrilled and precut. These kits are much sturdier, a sawhorse with a wood slat place on top is not as sturdy. One advantage, of a kit, is that it’s portable and can be dismantled and moved to different locations.

However, if you decided to build your bench work, it is more difficult. It also takes more time than using a kit. Building your own gives you the opportunity to design your own vision of a perfect model trains railway system. First, figure out the design you want and how large the bench work needs to be to accommodate your design. Take into consideration the possibility of adding to your model trains setup. Where in your home do you want to put your model trains railway setup? You can also shape your bench work to accommodate the space you decide on, it could be square, oval, rectangle or round. You may even use an octagon shape. Just make sure it’s strong enough to support your model trains railway when its been setup. Use at least a three eights of an inch to half an inch thick piece of plywood. Want it to be portable? Make it in sections that can be separated and put together again. Do this before you put together your bench work.

While you are building keep in mind the scenery you will be using in your model trains railway. You want the set to look larger than it really is. Keep this goal in mind. Using different levels for your scenery will give this illusion. Put larger trees in the front and the smaller trees in the rear gives the illusion of dept to your display. You can do this with mountains or in the background on the same level as the railway. While you are building your model trains railway, take into consideration your theme. Do you want mountains, lakes, summer, spring, winter or fall. More forest than meadows or visa versa.

There are many other ideas you can choose from. Add tunnels, fields, roads, rock formations, villages or individual houses. Maybe even a horse or cow farm place near a meadow. Use details in your design, such as signs, fences, flowers, bridges crossing a bed of water, such as a stream, lake or river. In a mountain scene you could add a waterfall feeding a stream. Don’t forget to add a horse or two to a horse farm, or a cow to a cow farm…people too.

Show off your artistic ability. Show all your friends how talented you are. Impress your friends with a well planned and built your model railway trains.
