The Fun Of Building Model Railway Trains Complete With Scenery

We all love model railway trains and building them with lots of scenery to surround them. But that’s only part of the fun. There’s more ways to enjoy your model trains, than just around the Xmas tree, once a year. You might want to have them available all year long.

The foundation of your model trains railway system would be the bench work. As a hobbyist you have a couple of options. You could build one yourself or buy one already made. There are advantages to buying a benchwork kit, everything is predrilled and precut. These kits are much sturdier, a sawhorse with a wood slat place on top is not as sturdy. One advantage, of a kit, is that it’s portable and can be dismantled and moved to different locations.

However, if you decided to build your bench work, it is more difficult. It also takes more time than using a kit. Building your own gives you the opportunity to design your own vision of a perfect model trains railway system. First, figure out the design you want and how large the bench work needs to be to accommodate your design. Take into consideration the possibility of adding to your model trains setup. Where in your home do you want to put your model trains railway setup?  You can also shape your bench work to accommodate the space you decide on, it could be square, oval, rectangle or round. You may even use an octagon shape. Just make sure it’s strong enough to support your model trains railway when its been setup.  Use at least a three eights of an inch to half an inch thick piece of plywood. Want it to be portable? Make it in sections that can be separated and put together again. Do this before you put together your bench work.

While you are building keep in mind the scenery you will be using in your model trains railway. You want the set to look larger than it really is. Keep this goal in mind. Using different levels for your scenery will give this illusion. Put larger trees in the front and the smaller trees in the rear gives the illusion of dept to your display. You can do this with mountains or in the background on the same level as the railway. While you are building your model trains railway, take into consideration your theme. Do you want mountains, lakes, summer, spring, winter or fall. More forest than meadows or visa versa.

There are many other ideas you can choose from. Add tunnels, fields, roads, rock formations, villages or individual houses. Maybe even a horse or cow farm place near a meadow. Use details in your design, such as signs, fences, flowers, bridges crossing a bed of water, such as a stream, lake or river. In a mountain scene you could add a waterfall feeding a stream. Don’t forget to add a horse or two to a horse farm, or a cow to a cow farm…people too.
