Toy Model Trains: Not Just for Kids
Thomas the train is one of the first toy model trains to capture the fantasy of young boys everywhere. Trains have long been awe-inspiring and even addicting to millions of people around the world. As small children, they watch the cartoon talking trains on Saturday morning, not fully grasping what makes them so awesome. As they grow up into adults however they learn that the captivation they felt as children has less to do with the imagery and more with the raw power of the machine and that the average person can control them.
What is it that drives men to play with toys? It might be that they are enthralled by the thought of controlling something so powerful even though it is 1/87 of its size. Maybe it is the puzzle of how trains work; the electricity running through the lines to make it run. Perhaps it is because trains are so organized; only able to run on its track. Or maybe it is the memories of seeing the train whistling around the Christmas tree every year that makes us want to relive it through our toy trains. But the word toy is not accurate any longer when talking about model trains. These toys have grown up into machines and are ready to play with the big boys.
Most toy trains that you find on sale during the holiday season are of the plastic variety. Generally, they are low priced and low quality though they are a great way to introduce children to the hobby. As young boys grow up they become known as men, likewise when toy train models grow up they are known as locomotives. Locomotives are built for the long haul. Sets of this caliber are made of better materials and unlike cheaper train models; you will not have to push it, a little to get the train started. The wheels are designed to stick to the track better, which in turn means better connectivity to the electric that powers the train. Railroaders everywhere will smile at these improvements! In addition, the locomotive models have much stronger engines, which of course means these babies will pull like a horse. If you are unsure, whether you are looking at a true locomotive or a cheap toy model trains remember that locomotives are made of metal and not plastic. Metal trains are much heavier than plastic, which creates better contact with the tracks and overall a better running model.
And if electricity wasn’t good enough, the wonderful makers of the model train industry offer steam engines for the little boys inside grown men. Of course there are a lot of different quality trains on the market that offer steam but, there is nothing better then enjoying these trains with lifelike steam filling their scenery.
Although many people would love to grow up and drive trains, not everyone can or will. Some who do may not see their job as a lifelong dream but rather a simple job they must do. However if you are a person who has loved trains for as long as you can remember there is another way to enjoy the scenery. A toy model train is a hobby that can fulfill some of the longing in your heart.
